GE Appliances & Lighting, along with The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, have declared a fully voluntary recall of approximately 181,000 GE Front-Loading Washers. The company was made aware of a problem involving a wire within the washer that can break and subsequently touch metal located in the washtub, if this happens during a wash cycle there is a danger of shock or fire to consumers. Thus far GE has been made aware of 7 occurrences of this particular malfunction, causing flames, and slight smoke damage, there have been no reports of injuries.
Owners of the recalled washers should discontinue use of the affected models immediately. After the issuance of a recall it is illegal to try to sell any of the effected models.
The following models manufactured between 12/2006 and 02/2010 are effected by the recall, you can find the model and serial number on either the underside of the door or at the bottom right of the washing machine:

These models, all made in China, would have been purchased between 12/2006 and 05/2010 for approximately $700. Consumers need to unplug the washer without delay, discontinue use, and contact GE for information about free repair.
